 Chimnissing Animal Rescue -
The Chimnissing Animal Adoption and Emergency Rescue is a non-profit organization, who's mandate is to provide homes for unwanted animals on Native Reserves.  The majority of dogs we get in are medium-large sized, mixed breed dogs.  All our animals are vet checked, up to date in age appropriate vaccinations, treated with Revolution, and de-wormed with Pancur Suspension.  And, if they're over the age of 6 month, are spayed/neutered before they are adopted.  We currently do not have a  shelter, we rely on foster homes.

For further details go to:  Chimnissing Animal Rescue Website.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email Christian Copegog at: chimnissingrescue@hotmail.com

-   Fisher Populations Have Increased on Christian Island.
These animals resemble large, bushy-tailed cats.

Fisher Definition: The fisher looks like a thin overgrown weasel which is covered in fur. The male measures 40 inches long and weighs no more than 20 pounds. The female has 35% less fat and is about 10% shorter than the male. The fur is blackish-brown and the fisher has a pale gray spot on its head and shoulders. It has a pale face and very dark feet. The fisher has a long body, short legs, a pointed face, rounded ears, and a bushy tail that weighs about 2 pounds.  (Posted to a Fisher forum on the internet).  See Smithsonian link below for more information regarding these predatory carnivores.

WARNING! Prey includes all small creatures; mice (eaten whole), squirrels, rabbits, porcupines, and House Pets, especially cats and small (up to 30 lbs.+) dogs.  Please be wary of leaving your pet out alone to roam on the Island at any time.   There are no natural predators on the Island to keep the Fisher population at a reasonable level.  These creatures have become bolder as their numbers increase and prey is depleted.  Island Fishers are extremely aggressive in their quest for food and could attack if provoked.  Exercise caution if encountering one of these members of the marten family.  Some have been found in and around the garbage bins, please keep the areas around the bins clean.

Warning - Giant Hogweed on Chimnissing

Giant Hogweed has been identified in several locations around the lighthouse area as well as a few areas along the roadsides.  I am available to remove or identify the plant if you believe it may be on your property.  I would treat this plant in the same manner as poison ivy, stay clear of it and do not touch it (definitely DO NOT BURN it). Please do not attempt to remove this plant on your own, contact the lands office and ask for Mike, he will be happy to assist.  Mike Smith, Tel: 247-2051 ext 254   Email : msmith@chimnissing
